Frequently Asked Questions
We often get asked questions about Biodiesel - here are some of the most common questions. Please click the question to reveal the answer.
If you have a question that isn't here then you can ask us, using the form below.
Biodiesel is a clean burning renewable fuel that can be used interchangeably with mineral diesel in most engines, generators and boilers. We make ours from used cooking oil (UCO) - through a chemical process known as transesterification. This non toxic and biodegradable fuel can be used as a straight replacement for mineral diesel or it can be blended with mineral diesel (often 50:50).
It improves engine lubrication, it burns more completely thereby reducing emissions, it’s virtually sulphur free and can deliver increased engine life.
Above all biodiesel can reduce carbon dioxide – one of the gases responsible for global warming.
What are the environmental benefits?
Biodiesel is made from renewable and sustainable resources therefore reducing the pressure on dwindling mineral oil supplies.
Using biodiesel is a practical way that people and businesses can reduce their carbon footprint.
Will I need to have my engine modified?
No. One of the main benefits of switching to biodiesel or a biodiesel blend is that no vehicle or engine modifications are required, as opposed to LPG. This also means that you can easily switch between using biodiesel and mineral diesel if you want to.
How do I know if I can use biodiesel in my vehicle?
The answer is almost certainly "yes you can". Biodiesel can be used in almost any diesel vehicle that is 3 or more years old with no problems. However, some of the newer computer controlled engines may need a biodiesel blend - so please ask us for your specific vehicle.
If you have a DPF fitted then you can only use a 50% biodiesel blend.
Will I have to change my fuel filters?
Biodiesel has a cleaning effect - which mineral diesel doesn't have. This means that when you start to use biodiesel it will clean out any deposits that have built up in your vehicle's fuel system. These will be trapped by the fuel filters. This means that you will need to change your fuel filters quite soon after you switch to biodiesel or a biodiesel blend. You should only have to do this once. When you have been using biodiesel for a while then you shouldn't have to change the filters any more than you normally would.
How easy is it to use a blend of biodiesel and mineral diesel?
Very easy. Because their properties are so similar you can simply put them in your fuel tank one after the other and they will blend together. This is known as "splash blending".
It is also easy to switch between mineral and biodiesel, just fill up with whichever one you like.
How does biodiesel perform in cold weather?
Biodiesel has very similar properties to mineral diesel, but there are a few differences. The main one that you might notice is that in cold weather (below 0 to -5 C) it can become more viscous. It may also start to form waxy deposits and these could block the fuel filters.
During the winter we add special chemicals to all the fuel we sell to help it perform better in colder weather, to temperatures -5C and below. However, when it is likely to drop below freezing we do recommend that you blend biodiesel with mineral diesel 50:50 (i.e. using just a 50% blend of biodiesel). This should ensure trouble free motoring, whatever the weather.
How does biodiesel affect general engine performance?
Becuse biodiesel burns more cleanly than mineral diesel you may well experience a slight improvement in power and MPG. This is especially likely if you use it in a blend (e.g. 50% or 75%).
My vehicle has a DPF fitted in the exhaust-system. Can I use biodiesel at all?
Where a vehicle has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) fitted you can use a biodiesel blend. It is recommended to use a 30-50% blend. We also recommend that you change the lube oil at half the normal service-intervals, and keep an eye on fuel-lines during its normal service works.
Can I use AdBlue with biodiesel?
Biodiesel and SCR are compatible even if 100% Biodiesel is used. Of course all special material demands on the engine running with biodiesel have to be considered for the complete SCR-equipment on the truck.
When using biodiesel the exhaust gas may contain more NOx and the AdBlue consumption of the SCR equipment could be slightly higher if used at 100% biodiesel.
Well... We start with used cooking oil (UCO) which is cleaned, filtered and transformed.
Using UCO means that we are recycling a waste product and not adding to food price inflation, and certainly not causing trees to be cut down to plant bio-crops. It is much more ecological than using fresh oil.
We then pre-process the oil - separating, filtering and de-watering it. After this, we react it with Methanol and a catalyst. This reaction is called transesterification and it chemically changes the oil into something called Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME). We call it biodiesel.
We then remove the glycerol that is also produced in the reaction and also any soap that may have been created. We then filter the fuel and pop it through a final "polishing" process and it is finally ready for sale.
What about my vehicle warrantee?
All vehicle and engine manufacturers allow you to use at least some biodiesel in your vehicles. They have to, all pump diesel must now contain 5% biodiesel by law.
Mercedes Benz will allow you to use up to 100% biodiesel in their warranteed vehicles, most other manufacturers will allow 30%. We have collected some information from various manufacturers so you can see what yours says about biodiesel:

Will it always be cheaper than mineral diesel?
Yes.
We guarantee that our biodiesel will always be cheaper than mineral diesel at the pump - so you can save money as well as reducing your emissions.
We know that some people sell biodiesel even cheaper than us - however a lot of this biodiesel is classed as "heating fuel". This means that the road fuel duty has not been paid and it is illegal to use it in any vehicle. If you are caught, then you may well be liable. All our fuel is Road Duty Paid and because we report to HMRC monthly you have proof that you are using "road legal" biodiesel.
We can sell biodiesel for heating purposes - but if we do then we clearly state this and account for it to HMRC.
